What is Base64URL?

The standard Base64 alphabet includes the plus sign (+) and forward slash (/), which have special meanings in URLs. Base64URL replaces the plus sign with a hyphen (-) and the slash with an underscore (_).
Base64 vs Base64URL - what's the difference?
The only difference is the translation alphabet. Standard Base64 uses + and /, and mandates padding equals signs (=). Base64URL uses - and _, and typically omits the padding equals signs entirely because the equals sign is reserved for query parameters in URLs (e.g., ?token=value).
Why does Base64 use equals signs?
The equals sign (=) is a padding character. Because the Base64 algorithm requires data in exact 24-bit (3 byte) blocks, if the original data is not perfectly divisible by 3, the algorithm adds zero-bits to fill the final block. The equals sign explicitly tells the decoder how many artificial bytes were added so it can discard them.
What does Base64 padding mean?
Padding means adding meaningless placeholder data to satisfy the mathematical requirements of an algorithm. In Base64, if your data ends with one padding character (=), it means the last block only contained 2 real bytes. If it ends with two padding characters (==), the last block only contained 1 real byte.
What happens when padding is missing?

What is UTF-8 Base64?

Can Base64 contain Unicode?

Can I decode Arabic Base64?

Can I decode images?
